I was watching one of my favorite TV shows the other night, Survivor. I continue to be fascinated with this show. I can’t help but put myself in the shoes of the contestants and wonder how I would do the first night, sleeping in a jungle. The strange noises and the bugs – all the bugs!

Initially, tribes are selected and each tribe trots off to establish their living space. It’s interesting to watch as leaders naturally emerge and the dynamic of completely different personalities learning to work together. A common phrase on the show is, “we’ve got to keep the tribe strong.” Typically, an immediate focus is building a shelter before the sun goes down.

There’s one veteran contestant within each “newbie” tribe. And the newbies are looking to the veteran for guidance. There’s this flurry of activity, people are running around gathering palm branches and any building materials they can find in the jungle. You can almost feel the intensity of the anxiety those contestants are going thru.

But this season, an interesting thing happened. The veteran said, let’s just go swimming. It was like he gave them permission to stop running around in circles and just be. I saw it as a brilliant team building exercise. So, they all calmed down, went swimming, enjoyed the beautiful beach and got to know each other. For some of them, I think it was the first time they took a breath!

There’s a lot of parallels in Survivor and in practice life. The doctor is like the veteran and the Team is like the newbies. The Team is looking to the doctor for guidance. And sometimes the best thing to do, is “JUST GO SWIMMING”!! It’s refreshing for Teams to see their leader as a real person.

So, your action step this week is very simple. Keep your tribe strong. There’s no new plan for you to follow… No strategies to implement… Lighten things up a bit and focus more on the enjoyment of your day with them rather than the tasks. It may sound counter-intuitive to you, but sometimes “going swimming” builds the strongest teams.

So, what do you think about these ideas? We’d love to hear from you. Please post your comments, tweet this, like it on Facebook or share the link with a colleague.
